MASSA'S IN DE COLD GROUND By Stephen C. Foster
Round de meadows am a ringing
De darkeys' mournful song,
While de mockingbird am singing,
Happy as de day am long.
CHORUS:
Down in de corn-field
Hear dat mournful sound:
All de darkeys am a weeping,
Massa's in de cold, cold ground
There were at least two other songs of this ilk in the collection; one had the word "coon" in the first verse. Some with copyright dates as late as the 30's. It was eerily fascinating.
but it turns out there's some much better examples of this out there:
I think Halle Berry said something like this in "Bulworth"
Shades of T. Herman Zweibel!
Racist AND retroactively homophobic!
