nostalgia for an age yet to come... [Apr. 23rd, 2009|12:07 am]

I've been watching reruns of local comedy show "Almost live" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almost_Live) that date from the Clinton/grunge years.

Imagine a time when Bill Gates wasn't yet married and hadn't built his megahouse, the Kingdome was still up, they hadn't chosen a location for the Downtown Main Seattle Public Library, and Bill Nye the Science Guy wasn't famous yet. This was a decade before I lived here, but it's nice to see that jokes about Ballard drivers and our sports teams leaving are eternal.

Oddly, after a month of watching these, I have seen NONE of the recurring sketches mentioned in the Wikipedia article, but tons of dated references to former Seahawks I've never heard of. It's also fun to watch the opening montage to see how different the skyline is now.

Why you whippersnapper -- I was around when these were BROADCAST. We used to call it "Almost Funny." But actually I liked it. It was so cutting edge when Mudhoney were the Lame List. I still remember some bits: "Vanishing Seattle" that had the Last Corner Without An Espresso Stand.

I got here in 95 and they were still running. I remember you could get tickets to be in the live audience. I never did it, and I wish now I had.

I watched Almost Live on Comedy Central in 1992-93. Great stuff. Where are you getting the reruns from?

I had dinner with Bill Stainton and friends last year. That was fun!
