obtuse simile of the week: [Jun. 30th, 2004|01:25 pm]
Just me.
Seen on political info booth outside the library:

"Tony Blair is to Hitler as Lyndon Larouche is to FDR"

Does it help you to understand it if I tell you it was on a pro-Larouche table? No, me neither.

The table also has a sign which suggests that if you don't support Larouche, the only jobs for your children will be at Starbucks and Wal-Mart. People were actually talking to his volunteers when I walked by. Apparently Larouche has kept a low-enough profile lately that many people are unaware of his, uh, unusual past assertions that Queen Elizabeth II is a drug dealer, Henry Kissinger and Walter Mondale are Soviet agents, and that "the Beatles had no genuine musical talent, but were a product shaped according to British Psychological Warfare Division specifications.".

In conclusion, "Vote Quimby".

Recall Quimby! Wolfcastle for Mayor!

I think they meant "Just as FDR defeated that monster Hitler, so will LaRouche defeat that Hitler-of-our-day Tony Blair".

So their meaning would have been clearer if they'd phrased the analogy as "LaRouche is to Blair as FDR was to Hitler", or vice versa. Though mathematically, the analogies are equivalent. (That is, if "A is to B as X is to Y" is true, then "A is to X as B is to Y" will also be true. e.g. "2:3 :: 4:6" is true, therefore "2:4 :: 3:6" is true.)

Gotten any new boxes of CDs lately?

Wolfcastle is to Quimby as....

That's certainly one way to look at it. Another way is:

Tony Blair (a lukewarm politician of questionable values) is x times greater than Hitler (the nadir of the spectrum); so too is Lyndon Larouche x times greater than FDR (already a great man).

Given examples of Larouchean logic, however, it is more likely that they meant that just as Tony Blair triumphed over Hitler, so too will Lyndon Larouche triumph over FDR. Reality has never been a solid touchstone for Larouche.

I'm rather fond of this little quote on brainwashing...

"First they say your father was nothing, your father was a queer, your father was a woman. They play very strongly on homosexual fears. It doesn't work on women... Most women are to a large degree homosexual in this society. The relationship between daughter and mother is homosexual, so the thing is not much of a threat."

Suddenly I have new understanding on the opposite sex. I can't wait to use this at the next singles bar...

Every time I see my GF with her mom, I'm going to picture them going at it, like all good mother-and-daughter relationships...

Oh my god!!!

"Now the next thing you do is you build them up for fear in males and females of homosexuality, aim them for an anal identification with anal sex, their mouth is identified with fellatio. Their mouth is identified only with the penis -- that kind of sex, and with woman. Womanhood is the fellatio of the male mouth in a man who has been brainwashed by the KGB; that is sucking penises. . . ."

Oh my GOD! That incomprehensible writing style... that repetition of meaningless words, over and over... What we have just read is potentially the first instance of a Time Cube slash fanfic.

Just a note to say "hi" and I thought of you often while exuding precious bodily fluids at ALA in Orlando. Wish you attended conferences, and not for your sake. Look at my opposite of E/N blog at http://benchsaw.blogspot.com

My passion for you refuses to die. Look at my blog. Go to ALA.

?? what's that mean?

your blog is funny and well written (of course) but over my head, unless I want to make a cheap joke about the biscuit joinery game. Write me an email and tell me about your life and job search and all.

Re: Off-topic

Opposite of E/N: E/N = the "everything/nothing" site. Going on the principle that the doorway to the universal is the particular, I've made my blog very particular indeed.

Will write you an e-mail ASAP. Your toes are objects of worship to me. Let's start our own penal colony.

Oh yeah, I forgot to show you all the Larouche literature I picked up while I was downtown there one day. I've only really leafed through it, but he does fancy himself a latter-day FDR, what with his desire for a New Deal-type revamping of the infrastructure....
