mini-review: Battle Royale II [Feb. 19th, 2004|01:36 pm]
Just me.
Job Bob Briggs says the secret to a good sequel is to make the same movie over again. Please inform producers of BRII that doesn't mean "take a few characters from the first movie, throw in heavy handed politics and America-hatin', way too many army-storming-the-compound scenes, but it'll work if we can get Beat Takeshi to come back for a pointless flashback cameo".

There are so many things wrong with the way this film turned out I can't be bothered to rant about them all. But it almost made me dislike the first film in retrospect.

Avoid, avoid!

I dunno, I kinda liked it for sheer over-the-top-oh-my-god-let's-see-how-far-we-can-take-this-one factor.

I mean, c'mon. The opening shot, with the towers falling? The whole Al-Qaeda angle?

That takes some serious cajones.

I laughed, sad to say.

but look at it in the larger context: Shuya and his gang are on an island- that's bugged and danger zoned by the BR staff. If they have that kind of access, why don't they/the army take him out? the rules of BRII (take out shuya, you die if your partner dies) aren't nearly as interesting as (and make less sense than) the original BR rules.

If it were me, I'd have made BRII more like BRI, but with the added tag team element. Imagine having to work as a team until the last moment, when you have to turn on your partner- that would have been a great film.
