fiction:
1) Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke (audio)- 19th century English magicians. Epic and long. good but maybe not worth the time I put into reading it. Audio recording was very good, though.

2) Bangkok Haunts by John Burdett -3rd in Thailand cop series. not as good as first two- too many ghosts and spirits. still okay though.

3) The King of Methlehem by Mark Lindquist - perhaps the best Tacoma novel ever. meth cooks. cops. grime. recommended.

4) Wakefield by Andrei Codrescu (audio) - good recording, meh book. starts good, end was disappointing. possibly the worst book I read this year (aside from ones I started and didn't complete, I mean)

5) You Suck: A Love Story by Christopher Moore - funny non-gothy vampire tale. sequel to the title below, which I should have read first, but didn't . recommended.

6) Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story by Christopher Moore. you should read this one first, but the sequel is better. recommended.

7) Fieldwork by Mischa Berlinski - Missionaries vs. anthropologists in Thailand's hill-tribe area. Excellent first novel. recommended.

non-fiction:
1) The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible by A. J. Jacobs. just what it says. funny, even for non-believers.

2) The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir by Bill Bryson (audio)- memoir of growing up in fifties Des Moines, Iowa. touching, nice tale of childhood. not as good as his travel stuff but still worthwhile. Nice portrait of the midwest. More about the infamous Katz from Walk in the Woods. recommended.
