freecycle post of the week: [Nov. 30th, 2004|10:55 pm]
Just me.
Subject: [freecycleseattle] Wanted: Vice (Lynnwood)

My first thought was, don't most people have enough vice on their own without asking for more? Then I thought, oh wait, they mean Vice the hipster mag. I could see someone having a stack of those around here.

However, what this poor speller is actually asking for is a "Vise", which is a lot less depraved than what I thought.

also related to freecycle, in the "almost deleted as pornographic spam" category is someone wanting to adopt my dog Elzar (adopted many months ago via freecycle): note subject line:

Hi - i am looking for a dog to adopt.(rest deleted)

I almost told this poor fellow what kind of msgs are usually attached to the subject "dog lover", but did not.

In actually spam news, today I got a spam titled "Green Card Lottery". anyone who was on Usenet Back In the Day will understand how nostalgic this made me.

Dude! 'Vice' is an acceptable alternate spelling. 'vice-like grip' is seen more often than 'vise-like grip', at least for me. But I encoutner that phrase mostly in 30s-era gumshoe novels, so it may be a thing from Long Ago.

Vise is only used in the US. Everywhere else (that sprechens sie Englisch), it's vice for both the screw and the screwing, and i think it's only recently standardized as vise for the screw-based device here.
